Chinese New YearAptly timed to coincide with Chinese New Year, which was celebrated yesterday, our guest blog today comes from the China-Britain Business Council (CBBC) on inward investment opportunities from China in the life sciences sector.

China’s overseas foreign direct investment reached US$116 billion in 2014 – an increase of 15.5% over the previous year and the UK continues to be Europe’s most attractive destination for Chinese investment. In 2014, the UK benefited from US$5.1 billion of investment from China – nearly 30% of Europe’s total.

In relation to this, the China-Britain Business Council is currently engaged in a project to help boost inward investment to the UK from China in the life sciences sector.

The main aim is to increase the number of foreign direct investment (FDI) projects being identified and landed and to create close relationships with potential inward investors from China. A number of Chinese organisations have now been identified which would like to explore the potential opportunities to partner with or invest in counterparts in the UK. Details of these organisations and an overview of their requirements can be found here.

Work has also started to engage with life sciences organisations and companies in the UK which might be interested to start a dialogue with the contacts identified in China and to explore the options for partnership or investment. If you would like to find out more about this, please get in touch.

The challenges facing the healthcare sector in China provide many potential opportunities for UK organisations. The UK capabilities in healthcare-related goods and services provide an ideal match for China’s national healthcare objectives. It is for this reason that, in recent years, UK-China collaboration in healthcare has received unprecedented coverage by both governments. One recent example is the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the University of Warwick and Sun Yat-sen University Cancer Center to create a research partnership in cancer diagnosis and specialist cancer care.

As our Chinese counterparts welcome in the New Year, do take a look at the increasing opportunities for collaboration in the life science industry.
